Commenting on the escalating protests in Hong Kong, Lib Dem leadership candidate Ed Davey MP said:
“Jeremy Hunt must stop obsessing over the Tory leadership contest and start standing up for the millions of citizens in Hong Kong whose freedoms are under threat, not least those with legal connections to our country.
“Over 35 years ago, Paddy Ashdown first made the radical proposal to give Hong Kong Chinese with British National Overseas Passports the right to come to the UK – to protect their civil rights and freedoms. His policy was right then and it would be right now.
“We still have moral and legal duties to a significant number of the people living in Hong Kong and it’s time for Jeremy Hunt to give the leadership they need.”
